In April 2026, the Indian Plumbing Association (IPA) launched a new initiative at PlumbexIndia 2026, the largest exhibition of water, sanitation, and plumbing products in India. Held at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) in Bengaluru, the event brought together policymakers, industry leaders, engineers, and innovators at a critical moment for water infrastructure across the country.
At the center of that effort: the inaugural IPA Bathroom Challenge.

A New Kind of Plumbing Skills Showcase
The IPA Bathroom Challenge is a live, skills-based installation competition organized by the IPA in collaboration with IAPMO and IWSHⓇ. Competing teams demonstrate excellence in bathroom and toilet installations with references to the National Building Code (NBC) BATH and Uniform Illustrated Plumbing Code of India (UIPC-I) standards.
The goal is to elevate plumbing skills and increase interest in plumbing careers by making quality workmanship visible to an industry audience.

IAPMO served as the official Knowledge Partner of PlumbexIndia 2026, and IWSH and IAPMO provided technical support for the new challenge format, drawing directly on the experience IWSH has built through IWSH Plumbing Champions skills projects at events like WorldSkills and ISH Frankfurt. Seven teams of four people took part, with each team representing a cross-section of Plumbing and Engineering skillsets and professional experience.
IWSH and the IPA: A Long-Standing Partnership

IWSH's relationship with the IPA goes back to 2015, when the IPA Nashik Chapter hosted and co-developed IWSH's first-ever Community Plumbing Challenge. The IPA Bathroom Challenge marks a new chapter in that decade-long collaboration as IWSH celebrates its 10th year.
Over the six months prior to PlumbexIndia 2026, the IWSH team worked alongside IPA to help design the challenge format, consulting on the overall approach and structure. The IPA team developed the Test Project installation tasks from those discussions.
On the first day of PlumbexIndia 2026, IWSH International Program Director Grant Stewart and IWSH Project Manager Adam Koenigs led a full training session for participating teams, covering installation practices and practical skills development. On the second day, each team was tasked with completing a bathroom installation, applying the training gained on day one: a timed challenge, against the clock, testing speed, accuracy, concentration, communication, problem-solving, and understanding of the relevant national plumbing codes and standards. IPA judged the competition, awarding cash prizes to the first, second, and third place teams, followed by a detailed debrief session with the entire group.
Why It Matters

India faces acute pressure on water resources due to rapid urbanization, groundwater depletion, and aging infrastructure. According to WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme data, approximately 300 million people in India still lack access to basic sanitation. Skilled, code-compliant plumbers are central to closing that gap, and competitions like the IPA Bathroom Challenge make that case directly to the industry leaders who can act on it.
“The IPA Bathroom Challenge was envisioned as a dynamic platform to promote innovation, efficiency, and sustainability in bathroom design and plumbing practices,” said Gurmit Singh Arora, National President, Indian Plumbing Association. “The initiative received an enthusiastic response and was widely appreciated for its focus on practical, forward-thinking solutions aligned with global standards.”
"This new collaboration will help strengthen the workforce in India to address its acute pressure on water resources," said IWSH Managing Director Sean Kearney. "What we have launched at PlumbexIndia 2026 inspires many new ideas for improving and innovating this Bathroom Challenge model, both for future editions of this event and for other plumbing industry collaborations in India.”
