According to the World Health Organization at least one in three African people is affected by water scarcity, leaving them without enough fresh water for drinking, cooking and food production, as well as sanitation, hygiene and cleanliness practices. Consequently, open defecation is a common practice, leading to an estimated 115 deaths every hour in the African Region. Bacteria, viruses, parasites and pollution contaminate the freshwater supply. Many people have resorted to storing water in their homes, which leads to household water contamination and serves as a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which carry such diseases as scarlet fever and malaria.
